Some iPhones will be skipped this year.

iOS 13 for the iPhone is coming later this year and with this software update so does the dreaded question: which smartphone will get the update and which one will be skipped?

Apple’s future update includes new features like dark mode (to make the screen easier on your eyes) and it’s going to be even bigger on privacy.

One of the most important updates though will be speed. Apple said they’ve made improvements to the operating system that will make apps open up to two times faster.

In its efforts to play catch-up with Google Maps, Apple Maps is also getting a long awaited overhaul - but with a focus on the US for now.

Here are all the phones that are getting iOS 13:

  • iPhone XS

  • iPhone XS Max

  • iPhone XR

  • iPhone X

  • iPhone 8

  • iPhone 8 Plus

  • iPhone 7

  • iPhone 7 Plus

  • iPhone 6S

  • iPhone 6S Plus

  • iPhone SE

The iOS 12-compatible iPhones that are not getting an upgrade are iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus.

Does it mean it’s time for an upgrade? It depends. Realistically, iOS 12 still performs really well, but it’s a matter of preference. Also, to be on the safe side, those on devices older than iPhone 7 should probably wait a few weeks after the new update and check if anyone reports a slowdown.
